Unit 9 Final


Introduction
1. Why is it important for health and wellness professionals to develop psychologically, spiritually, and physically?
The importance of being well-rounded or developed in these three key fields (psychological, spiritual, physical) is experience and knowledge. Knowledge in any given field is of great advantage to anyone hoping to pass on information to others, but this can only go so far. Experience is the key that can make a teaching experience like no other. When a professional is able to fully experience these three aspects of wellness he/she not only has the information of how these aspects benefit us, but also how they work.
Knowledge to me is great in understanding how something works but not the operation. Experience is how we understand the operation and if any faults. Experience will also guide us with its past experiences and show us what modifications or directions may change due to complications.  You cannot fully understand this with knowledge alone.  Therefore it is of the utmost importance any professional practices what they teach, as it connects them to the experience and material and allows them to help clients on a scale unreachable to those who do not.
2. What areas do you need to develop to achieve the goals you have for yourself?
The area I must concentrate on to fully envelop the complete spectrum of wellness is that of spirituality and psychological wellness. I believe that the in my spiritual path I will find what is right for me when the time is ready and that this is not something I can force myself into. The psychological side is something I can correct with daily mental practices and routine.
Assessment
1. How have you assessed your health in each domain?
In the physical side of wellness I have regularly utilized many fitness tests and monitored my physical health through annual check-ups with a physician. Some of the fitness tests I utilize are a comparison of a 3 mile run time every 6 months (cardiovascular), a one rep max (strength), and a non-distance set bike path routine (endurance). I unfortunately at this time do not submit to a regular flexibility test.
Since the beginning of this class I have never had a method in place for measuring the wellness of my mental state. However, I have recently been looking at my life as a whole and how my mind-set throughout the day’s activities can affect my overall health. I have created a routine were every night whilst in bed I run through the experiences I had and think about my action/reaction to the events. This has proved helpful in both understanding why I acted/reacted in these ways and allowed me to create methods of repeating unhealthy decisions in similar scenarios. I believe I have a journey ahead of me to complete mental enlightenment but I am on the right track and light years ahead of where I was.
The spiritual aspect of life for me has always been different than most would consider “Spiritual”. For myself I do not have faith in any divine being or religion, I however look at the earth as a whole. My spiritual side is alive when I am getting back to the basics and surrounding myself with nature. This is difficult to maintain at times as I cannot spend my entire life in these settings and therefore I am not “Spiritually” whole always.  The assessments I have had in place are a simple matter of listening to my feelings and how I feel overall in all aspects of my day.

2. How did you score your wellness spiritually, physically, and psychologically?
The highest scoring aspect of these three areas in my life would have to be the physical side of life. I routinely involve myself in activities that will help improve this aspect of my life and allow me to flourish in the results. My mental state is a close second as it has been something of great importance lately. The beauty of the psychological aspect of life is it is always accessible. You may not always be able to exercise, play, or partake in an act of faith, but you can always enjoy the sanctity of your mind. Finally, the spiritual aspect is one that is still growing with me and thus ranked last. I believe as I find new avenues into this world I will enjoy the full bodied wellness that accompanies all three aspects.
Goal Development
1. List at least one goal you have for yourself in each area?
The goal I have set for myself just recently is that of maintain proper nutrition. This is an important goal and the emphasis is on maintaining. I believe that all of the other aspects mentioned can be greatly affected by what we ingest on a daily basis. This goal is to not only prohibit “junk food” from my diet but also the mass produced chemical foods that are everywhere. My goal is to eat only foods with ingredients I understand and those that have less than 5 ingredients total.
In the psychological aspect in life I have been maintaining the goal of replaying the day’s events and selecting at least one scenario I could have done something different in. I then ensure I correct this action the next time it arises, or make amends if it had a negative effect one someone else. My goal is to maintain this practice as it will only allow me to grow as a person.
My spiritual goal has been one of great strides. I currently have in place a goal for feeling connected with people and the community I live in. My goal is to partake in community events throughout the year and volunteer time with local charities.
Practices for Personal Health
What strategies can you implement to foster growth in each of the following domains?
In the physical domain I will implement a flexibility routine such as yoga (this can act two-fold, physical & mental). The flexibility routine will help balance out my physical exercise routine as well as my capabilities. Second, I will utilize group training (spiritual & physical) as up until now I have trained predominately solo. I believe that by group training 1-2 times a week I might open myself up to learning new exercise routines and beginning new friendships socially.
Psychological strategies would be implementing a yoga routine to help me better control not only the flexibility of my body but also my mind body connection. I believe that by implementing this routine 2-3 a week can greatly improve my mental health and mind-body connection. Second, I would like to research other styles of meditation and find one that best suites me. I believe that by finding the form most enjoyable to me I can more thoroughly envelope myself in the practices.
Finally the spiritual practices I would enjoy involving in my daily life would be those of reflection upon the positives of the day and trying to decipher how the universe helped assist in making them possible. I would also like to participate in more charitable organizations such as the local Red Cross or helping in local soup kitchens (especially at the holidays) as this has always been a dream that my wife and I have.
Commitment
1. How will you assess your progress or lack of progress in the next six months? What strategies can you use to assist in maintaining your long term practices of health and wellness?
My assessments will be simple, in the few practices I have put in place success is determined by attendance. If I am able to ensure participation in these activities regularly I can expect to see improvements in these areas of my life. The three fields can only grow with routine work and that is a positive step I have put into place. However after the 6 month period is up I believe a stringer focus will be needed to help in mastering these parts of my life and can be assessed by a series of personal questions. These questions will all be ones that I can answer no too in my current state and upon meeting my 6 month assessment and positive yes’s can be accepted as progress.
Some examples can be: Are you truly happy with your day to day routine? Do you feel stressed multiple times throughout the day? Do you experience complete happiness all day long? Do you wish to change anything about your life?

Unit 8

Good afternoon everyone, the two practices I believe to be the most beneficial for myself are the subtle mind and loving kindness exercises. I have been incorporating the subtle mind exercises in my daily life by using it to slow down and gain a different perspective in exciting events in my life. For example a week ago my wife had called me because someone had hit her car while she was parked. At first I was extremely angry and my heart rate was rising faster as I drove to the accident. I found myself growing angry and getting ready to explode at the other driver as I approached, however I remembered to start controlling my breathing and calm my heart rate.Once I achieved this I was able to calm my nerves and start to understand that accidents happen and I should listen to what the other driver has to say about the accident. Unfortunately, I never got to test this practice in this dramatic episode as when I arrived the cops had come and left and so did the other driver.

The best way I can incorporate the loving kindness exercise is by thinking about all the positive influences people had on me throughout the day and of their good qualities. This is a great exercise I found to practice late at night whilst winding down for bed. It has helped me re-experience the day and interactions with others and help fall asleep with positive thoughts.

Unit 7


Good morning all, In this week’s exercise “Meeting Aesclepius” we were asked to take a journey through our mind and the mind of an individual we see as a spiritual and mental leader. I found this particular exercise to be more eventful and enjoyable than most. I felt as if I became more mentally stimulated than in past exercises and this made it easier to become deeply involved in the exercise. This exercise has also helped me foster a better awareness in my daily actions and mental states. In meeting this character I have formed a sort of mental mentor. With this mentor in tow (the back of my mind) throughout the day I often ask myself what would he do in this situation or my future self (the me I will achieve through following this mentor).  

Next we were asked to explain how the statement “One cannot lead where one has not gone himself” in our own beliefs. To me this is simple I look upon this statement as a great tool to help push us to experience all we can, as we cannot wish to make good decisions with no knowledge or experience. There will be many situations in life were we will need to decide to lead (teach) or follow (learn). If we are able to understand we are in the follow stage, we can grow and learn as an individual and better ourselves and those who we wish to help.

All these experiences from this week (tandem journey, statements) can effect myself and my career as they remind me I am not the only person that is effected by my actions and I must always be aware of how others will view and live with the results. In my career I must not be ignorant to my inexperience’s and know that my clients deserve the best they can get. I must also understand that not everyone will have the same views as me, and be empathetic of this factor.

Unit 6

       For the first exercise we were asked to close our eyes and for 10 minutes repeat a series of phrases. I found this exercise to be very relaxing and enjoyable for the first half. Upon entering the second half I found my mind drifting and by the last 2 minutes or so I became frustrated by boredom and my lack of focus.   However, I tried the exercise once again, but this time I did it mid-day in an empty house and found it more effective. I believe by returning to this exercise in an empty house and at 1 pm I was able to focus and have enough energy both expended and in reserve.

The second exercise was to partake in the integral assessment.  In this assessment there were many areas of my life that I needed to assess. I discovered through this process that my conative aspect of my psycho-spiritual side is motivated by psychological needs. I believe my biological aspect is rather wholesome, however I'd like to see it express helping others in the physical aspects of life, i.e exercise, nutrition, and motivation. Under the interpersonal aspect I feel as if I could be more involved with my community. Perhaps I could spread the biological/ physical needs and combine them with community, such as a community exercise program or hiking/biking/running club. Finally, in the worldly aspect I feel like I am lacking in all areas besides work. Once again this is a similar are to the last two and could be remedied by becoming involved in my community.

Unit 5 Subtle Mind

Good evening all,

             I found the subtle mind practice to be one of the most influential and helpful practices to date. The breathing exercises were great as they were something everyone could do and was easy to follow. As it was stated the mind follows the breath and as my breathe slowed and became controlled so did my thoughts. I found the "subtle mind" exercise to be extremely easy to follow opposed to the earlier practice "Loving kindness". The loving-kindness exercise was difficult for me to follow and concentrate on the each set of exercises and they felt as if they were spaced out very far from one another. This spacing caused an aggravation and impatience. With the subtle mind exercise the spacing did not affect me at all as the breathing exercises were enjoyable and had a soothing effect in which I did not notice the intervals. The way these exercises effected my life was in a positive light. I have used this exercise from memory many nights upon going to sleep or just grabbing a quick break in the day to slow down and relax. I find the ability to relax with this exercise can improve my mental and physical energy and health throughout the day.

Unit 4

Good afternoon all.

            For question one of the blog assignment I found the session to be difficult to follow as it seemed vague to me. I tried listening to it multiple times at different points throughout the day and still had difficulty with it. Now even though I had difficulty with this one I would still recommend it and will be re-attempting it until I am able to understand and feel this exercise working. Now for question #2 a mental workout is similar to brain training. This can be done by concentrating or focusing on certain aspects of our mind-body-physical being and really listening and paying attention to how we react both mentally and physically. If we were to practice these experiences and "workouts"daily, it is similar to working out our minds and making them not only stronger but more attune to everything around and inside of us.

Unit 3

Good evening everyone, before I start my blog this week I must confess my answers might be slightly skewed. The reason for this is I have been suffering from heavy congestion, sore throat, and flu like symptoms (minus the flu) kind of weird.

1. Now based on my reflections and a 1 to 10 scale I rate my physical well being at a 7-8 usually, my spiritual well being at an 8, and my psychological well being at a 9.

2&3.Some goals I would like to see in each area accomplished are: For my physical goal I would like to see the continuation of my smoking cessation (its been 3 days tobacco free) I need to continue this for not only my health but my family as well. A spiritual goal I would like to accomplish is to get in touch with nature more than I have in the past. I believe I can accomplish this by devoting time into a vegetable garden and spending more time with our new chickens. Finally to better improve my psychological demeanor I believe that more of a pacifistic tone in arguments and less confrontational can go a long way.

4. My experience in this weeks relaxation exercise started of as that frustrating as not only was my nose stuffed up by my upper chest congested. Over the period of this exercise I was able to put these symptoms behind me and clear my airway. I think that my sickness this week helped me better understand how this relaxation can help. Up until now 6:31pm I have spent all day in bed since last night and have not fully relaxed  as I have during this exercise.
